  • The Story of little Muck

    Wilhelm Hauff

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Oct. 15, 2018)
Rare edition with unique illustrations. Although the Brothers Grimm and Hans Andersen came to dominate the world of fairytales in the second half of the nineteenth century, they were not the only collectors or authors of fairytales to gain an English-speaking public during this period. Other German collectors of traditional tales are dealt with elsewhere, but of those writers who composed their own tales Wilhelm Hauff heads the list. His Marchen, whether published as a book or separately, have kept a firm place in German children’s reading from the time of their first appearance right to the present day. Equally, there has been a steady stream of English editions over the same period. An old artisan in a middle-eastern town finds himself the brunt of abuse from the townspeople, due to his hunch-back. The children, who call him "wicked", chase him and corner him in his shop. He locks them in, and tells them they can only leave once they have listened to his story. It turns out the old man used to be called "little Muck" in his youth. As a boy, Muck is kind and benevolent, despite being discriminated against by everyone. When his caring father dies, his greedy relatives ransack his house and threaten Muck. Muck escapes, and sets out in search of a merchant who can supposedly sell happiness…
  • Tales of the Caravan, Inn, and Palace

    Wilhelm Hauff

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 11, 2014)
Once upon a time, a large caravan moved slowly over the desert. On the vast plain, where nothing was to be seen but sand and sky, might have been heard in the far distance the tinkling bells of the camels and the ringing hoof beats of horses. A thick cloud of dust that moved before it indicated the approach of the caravan; and when a breeze parted this cloud, gleaming weapons and brilliantly colored garments dazzled the eye. Thus was the caravan revealed to a man who galloped towards it from one side. He rode a fine Arabian horse, covered with a tiger skin; from the deep-red trappings depended little silver bells, while on the horse's head waved a plume of heron feathers. The horseman was of stately bearing, and his attire corresponded in richness with that of his horse. A white turban, richly embroidered with gold, covered his head; his coat and Turkish trousers were of scarlet; while a curved sword, with a rich hilt, hung at his side. He had pulled the turban down well over his face; and this, with the black eyes that flashed from beneath the bushy brows, together with the long beard that hung straight down from his Roman nose, gave him a fierce and uncouth appearance.
